CONNECT AGRO SERIES - Clean technology and smart agriculture edition, UK-LATAC

This is an event organized by the embassies of the United Kingdom in Latin America and the Caribbean and will take place in a virtual format from the 26th to 28th October, 2021.

This three-day event will seek to showcase an academic agenda composed by different themes and activities addressed to the Agricultural sector. The event will display how British innovations and technologies contribute to the transition towards a more resilient and climate-smart agriculture.

Program

Day 1 – October 26th

Transition of the agricultural sector into a Net Zero future

The session will focus on the use of technology, innovations and services that help reduce environmental impact and global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from agriculture. Some of the topics included in the agenda are:

  • Improve efficiency in farms to reduce current emissions (transition to Net Zero)
  • Data-driven agriculture and agro-industrial transformation, Smart technology and precision farming, including livestock and fisheries
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Promote the use of nitrogen fertilizer and other organic fertilisers
  • Identify metrics and methods to measure and monitor carbon emissions throughout the value chain.

Day 2 – October 27th

Sustainable manufacturing and supply chains for the Agri-food industry

The agenda will include decarbonisation opportunities, technologies and innovations that could be implemented during the design and operation of agro-industrial project and sustainable supply chains, aligned with international commitments to reduce GHG emissions from the food supply network. The session will be focused on showcasing case studies in the UK on:

  • Schemes to Monitor and report GHG emissions from packing houses, warehouses, processing factories, among others
  • Water-efficient technologies and waste management
  • Clean energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy
  • Low carbon supply chains

Day 3 – October 28th

Strategies to decarbonise Agri-Industrial projects and its logistic chain

The session will be focused on sharing best practices and industry case studies on applying decarbonisation of logistic chains and reporting methods according to current and future standards in:

  • Road freight transport (cargo)
  • Port terminals and warehouses
  • International transport

Workshop - October 28th

Agri-Insurance to support climate change adaptation and resilience

9:00 am- 1:00 pm     //  10:00 am- 2:00 pm

This workshop will provide training to agritech SMEs, data modelers and insurance providers to increase the technical capacity to develop and design novel index-based insurance solutions for agriculture. The training will be focused on:

  • What are index-based insurance solutions?
  • Data quality (robustness and representativeness)
  • Data modelling (triggers, basis risks)
  • The role of IoT and smart technologies in increase parametric insurance uptake
  • Index-based insurance to transfer climate change risks
  • Regulatory framework of parametric insurances in Latin America
  • Success stories and challenges for the future
